The Pros and Cons of Nano Aquariums 2023

Nano aquariums of 10 gallons or less are undoubtedly popular in the fishkeeping hobby. Let’s discuss the pros and cons involved when keeping a nano fish tank. Firstly, it is important to ensure that your tank is cycled and meets the minimum size requirements for the fish you want to keep. The smallest tank size that you can keep fish in would be a 5 gallon tank for a single betta, 10-15 gallons gives you far more fish stocking options. With the correct knowledge and setup there is a variety of fish species that can be kept in a 10 gallon nano aquarium. Bettas, ember tetras, shell dwellers and chilli rasboras are a few species which can thrive in smaller sized aquariums of around 10 gallons.

Nano aquarium Cons:

  • Nano tanks are small, so your fish options are limited to nano fish species.
  • Nano setups require more frequent maintenance.
  • Nano tanks are less stable than large aquariums in terms of water parameters and things can go downhill quickly.
  • Nano tanks are commonly used to house fish which grow too large, unfortunately goldfish are often wrongly chosen for these smaller setups.
  • Aquascaping a nano aquarium can be difficult as you may struggle to fit in hardscape or achieve a sense of scale within the tank.
  • Nano aquariums are less impactful in a room when compared to larger tank.
  • Because nano tanks are smaller, equipment is more obvious within your aquarium.

Nano Aquarium Pros:

  • Nano tanks are small enough to fit in lots of spaces throughout your home and take up less space.
  • Nano tanks are often placed on desks which is an area you will spend a lot of time in meaning you can get a lot of enjoyment out of your aquarium.
  • Nano tanks are cheaper than large aquariums.
  • Nano tanks are quick to maintain. A 50% water change will take far less time when compared to a larger tank.
  • Nano tanks have lower wattage equipment and use less power.
  • You can get an All In One (AIO) nano tank which has a compartment built into the back of the tank for filtration and somewhere to place your heater, meaning all your equipment is hidden.
